OUR PROTEST ON JAN 24, 2021
A demonstration of how deeply the people of Tucson feel
BARNUM HILL & THE SOUTH DUCK POND MUST BE KEPT FREE-ACCESS PARKLAND
We are putting the public back into the park management process!
What we are asking for is perfectly reasonable. We are asking for the planned destruction of our parkland to be put on "pause" until public concerns can be considered and an alternate solution is found.
Open-to-the-public meetings are not the same as public outreach! Especially since announcements didn't say they were planning to take Barnum Hill and the South Duck Pond. There was no language of expansion in Prop 203. Voters did not approve or vote for zoo expansion into the Barnum Hill area in prop 203. This is our chance to make it clear how deeply upset we are that we, the public, were not considered within the process of this proposed public park land use transfer.
Holding signs, we marked with our bodies the 3.5 acres of free, public access, green, park space the City is planning to take from the public and wildlife who have been enjoying it since 1925.
Everyone was calm, considerate and confident, and acted in a safe manner. We stood masked, 10 feet apart, holding signs letting everyone know what is at stake! Our cherished, beloved, historic, shady area with a stream, waterfall and a beautiful, natural pond that has been home to turtles, ducks, and migratory birds for as long as most of us can remember.
With Thanks,
Save the Heart of Reid Park
