Miranda Schubert for Ward 6 City Council Member
On May 4, 2021, the Tucson City Council approved Council member Richard Fimbres’ motion to have any additional Reid Park Zoo construction be carried out on asphalt, preserving all Reid Park green space, a plan known as Option G-Minor. The plan was approved 6 to 1. The current Ward 6 council member, Steve Kozachik, was the only member of the council who voted against G-Minor, upholding the previous plan: to destroy Barnum Hill and the south duck pond. Successfully implementing Option G-Minor requires the political will to keep the project in line with what Fimbres outlined in his motion. For this to happen it is key to have council members who believe implementing Option G-Minor is important, people who will work with the people of Tucson to improve Reid Park. For Ward 6, Miranda Schubert is that candidate.
Save the Heart of Reid Park enthusiastically endorses Miranda Schubert for Ward 6 Council Member. With the climate crisis posing an increasing threat to Tucson, especially the city’s vulnerable populations, it's clear that accessible parkland and other green spaces are vital to the health and well-being of our community. The people of Tucson require a councilmember who prioritizes the protection of green spaces, listens respectfully and attentively to all Tucsonans, and actively leads the way in creating and implementing viable solutions that benefit Tucson as a whole. Miranda Schubert is committed to preserving accessible public parkland. Moreover, her excellent leadership skills, multicultural perspective, maturity and willingness to educate herself give Save the Heart of Reid Park confidence that as a Tucson City Councilmember she will implement viable solutions to make Tucson a better place to live for all.
Message from Miranda Schubert to the Co-chair of SHRP
Email sent May 5, 2021, the day after the Tucson City Council voted to save Barnum Hill and the South Pond
“Amanda and I are currently camping and woke up to the news of last night's vote. We quickly dashed to a coffee shop in town to charge our phones to read more.
“First, I just want to congratulate you and the rest of SHRP for successfully changing the course of events and saving Barnum Hill and the duck pond. I know there's a lot of work ahead, but this is an incredible achievement, and I'm so inspired to see proof of people power and solidarity triumphing over business as usual.
“Here's to option G-minor and building pedestrian bridges, not paywalls!”
